Need or want To the Editor: A need is something necessary to live and function. A want is something that can improve your quality of life. Using these criteria, a need includes food, clothing, shelter, and medical care, while wants include everything else. The proposed community center appears to be a want since it is not necessarily needed for a person to function as is food, clothing, and shelter. Fairmont needs to have manufacturing, retail, technology, education, and housing to have jobs for citizens to live and function. Employment would be the first most logical reason for ...

Fully informed citizenry is only just To the Editor: There was an open house on Nov. 2nd to inform Fairmont citizens on the proposed Fairmont Community Center. I attended the open house to learn more about this project. I expected to be educated on all costs of my investment, but I was very disappointed. I saw the cost to build the facility, a range of $23-46 million. The range depends upon how much is built and when it is built. I was provided no information on the cost to access something I/we built and own (yes, our money), or the cost to maintain the facility and who will own that ...

Get city council on right track To the Editor: In the 38 years that we have lived in Fairmont, we have never had a political sign in our yard or requested publicly that citizens vote for specific candidates. We feel that this is a very important election for the City of Fairmont and have realized this from past events that occurred this year in our neighborhood. We need the mayor and all council members to work together for the betterment of our City. We don’t expect all council members to agree on every agenda item, but we would hope that all council members would listen carefully ...

No to the YMCA To the Editor: I DO NOT support the YMCA. Fairmont cannot afford it now with the recession coming and heating bills going up 30 percent. I have talked to many people that live on their social security checks and cannot afford the YMCA. Now in a few years when Fairmont can get more businesses and have 1,000 more people coming in who can work, then I might say yes but not now when Fairmont is NOT growing, we say NO to the YMCA. Poppy is a tribute to all veterans To the Editor: On November 5, members of the Fairmont American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 36, will be distributing poppies in Fairmont. Veterans remember the wildflowers blooming in the devastated battlefields of France and Flanders. The basic purpose of Poppy Days are to offer the American public an opportunity to honor those that have and are presently serving for our freedom. The poppy is a memorial emblem to show a personal tribute for the sacrifice that has been made for America by the dead and the living veterans. The poppy is made by disabled ...
