Global Warming and Rising Oceans To the Editor: Given that our state and federal governments are set on reducing CO2 emissions, I wonder how much difference it will make since the highest CO2 emitter, China, is really not doing much to reduce its CO2 emissions. In the meantime, developing nations, especially, India, are rapidly increasing their CO2 emissions. In the news we read that the glaciers are melting, and the ice caps are shrinking due to global warming which will cause the oceans to rise. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Geological ...

Both equity and equality needed To the Editor: This letter is in response to a “Letter to the Editor” titled: “Misrepresenting MLK Jr.” published on Jan. 25, in the Sentinel. Council moves forward with lobbyist This week the Fairmont City Council approved moving forward with a lobbyist to help secure additional funding for a community center. This is a good investment by the council, and it’s good that it acted quick as there is a deadline of Jan. 31 for getting the request to legislators. Hopefully this move will help this project continue to move forward. Opera House chosen as event site Congratulations to the Fairmont Opera House for being chosen as the site for the upcoming Minnesota Sings Competition. The state-wide event will take place in ...

Misrepresenting MLK Jr.

MLK believed in liberty, free speech and equality, not “equity” which is a stepping stone to socialism. Equity treats people unequally through preferential treatment. He wanted his children to be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin. He wanted then to be successful citizens, not victims. Students today are taught that they need the government to succeed. Big government is usually ...

Kinship of Martin Co. receives blessing To the Editor: We were so blessed this Christmas season in so many ways by those in our community. One amazing gift (no pun intended) we were given was the ability to partner with Grace Lutheran and their Star Tree Program. Kinship was able to nominate some of our families to receive gifts through their annual giving efforts. Stars are placed on the tree in their church with ages and genders of individuals, and then church members and others are able to grab a star and shop for someone while they are doing their own gift shopping. In doing so, ...
