Sophomore enjoys playing “Taps”
FAIRMONT — Lilly Laven, a 10th grader at Fairmont High School, has been recognized for playing “Taps” at military funerals and other events.
Harry Brumbaugh, an active veteran in the community and member of the honor guard, said he mentioned it to school administration because he wanted Laven to receive some recognition for her work.
“It’s really refreshing to see a young person like Lily stepping up to honor a veteran,” Brumbaugh said.
Laven said she picked it up last summer when she played at the dedication for the cobra helicopter at the Martin County Veterans Memorial site.
Laven is in both band and orchestra at Fairmont High School and plays the french horn, trumpet and cello.
Though “Taps” is usually played on a bugle, Laven admitted she doesn’t know how to play that yet but plays it on the trumpet.
She shared how she first came to play at funerals and other events.
“My grandpa, Steve Fosness, is in the legion, and he asked me and my brother(Hunter) to play,” she said.
Laven plays if Moni Harper, who is usually the bugler during services, is unavailable.
So far, Laven said she’s played at about five different services.
“I like doing it. Being asked to do it is a huge honor. It’s a good way to honor the people that were in the service,” Laven said.
