Area roundup: Zarling earns top 10 finish in New Prague
PREP GOLF
NEW PRAGUE – The Fairmont girls’ golf team placed sixth in the 2026 New Prague Trojan Invitational on Friday afternoon with a score of 388. Holy Family Catholic and New Prague took home first with their score of 330. Jordan earned third after shooting a 362, while Waconia and Glencoe-Silver Lake finished with a 366 and 370, respectively.
Leslie Zarling finished ninth overall with an impressive score of 86. Katherine Zelaya’s 92 was good for 19th, while Carly Gustafson cracked the top 30 after her score of 99 placed 27th.
The Cardinal girls will return to action next Monday at Pipestone Area Country Club.
PREP TENNIS
FAIRMONT – Westonka tennis won all but one match during Friday afternoon’s meeting against Fairmont. The matches were held at the Fairmont High School tennis courts.
Tyler Slama was the lone victor for the Cardinals after taking down Jack Carlson. Slama won the first set 9-7 before falling in the second, 8-6. The two battled it out in the tiebreaker, but Slama took the set, 14-12.
Fairmont will play Waseca next Tuesday, starting at 4:30 p.m.
PREP BASEBALL
LUVERNE 12, FAIRMONT 2
LUVERNE – Luverne starting pitcher Joshua Hansen tossed five frames of dominant baseball to charge his team past Fairmont 12-2 on Friday afternoon. Hansen’s lone blemish came in the fifth and final inning of the game after Jensen Livesay knocked out a two-run home run to put Fairmont on the board. Hansen finished with six allowed hits and four strikeouts.
The Cardinals return home next Tuesday to take on St. James Area.
PREP SOFTBALL
MEDFORD 9, GHEC/T/ML 6
MEDFORD – Medford scored five of its nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 9-6 victory over Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Friday afternoon. Four of the Tigers’ 15 hits came in this frame. Mariel Parish had two hits to lead all Jaguars. Lili Wiens, Peyton Stohs and Chloe Nestegard recorded a hit of their own as well. Stohs pitched all six frames for GHEC/T/ML, with five of her nine allowed runs being earned. She struck out three batters while walking zero.
GHEC/T/ML will take on Martin County West next Monday at Fox Lake Area Sports Complex.
