City council adopts strategic plan

FAIRMONT–The Fairmont City Council met on Monday night and approved three event permits, approved the adoption of the City’s Strategic Plan and heard a presentation from Abdo, Eick & Meyers LLC for the 2020 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

The first of the three events approved was the Fairmont Opera House plan to host a Memorial Day Street Fest on Saturday. The event includes music, food, vendors, a flea market, family games and classic cars. This event will block Downtown Plaza from Blue Earth Avenue to the Second Street intersection.

The second event permit was approved for Fairmont Awards to hold a sidewalk sale on June 3 through June 5. This event will block off the street area in front of Fairmont Awards and The Salvation Army. The event will include a food truck and KBEW broadcasting live on Saturday.

The third event permit was approved to Easy Automation Company to hold a company party at Gomsrud Park on August 13, 2021. Easy Automation Company is planning to have three food trucks at this event along with family yard games and activities for their employees.

On April 13, 2021, the Mayor, all Council Members, City Administrator, Public Works Director, Finance Director, Police Chief, City Clerk and the Economic Development Coordinator met for a Strategic Planning session.

During the session, the group conducted a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threat analysis and discussed their vision, mission and priorities for the community. The three main goals that came from the session are maximizing community potential, cultivating a culture of trust, effective communication and collaborating and enhancing and protecting community amenities and infrastructure.

The Strategic Plan was adopted and as such will provide a foundational guide for City Staff and City Council as they move forward with planning and actions for the city. The document will be a living document that City Council and City Staff will review and update through future planning and work sessions.

Thomas Olinger from Abdo, Eick, and Meyers LLC presented information on the final budget compared to the actual amounts as well as said that things are moving in the right direction.

According to the presentation in the final budget, the revenues were roughly $9.3 million and expenditures were roughly $11 million. The actual amounts were $9.8 million for revenues and $9.6 million for expenditures.

The Fairmont City Council will meet next on June 14 at 5:30 p.m.
