Sherburn OKs ordinance

SHERBURN — Sherburn City Council has approved an ordinance related to unlicensed, unregistered or inoperable motor vehicles.

During discussion, a question was raised about boats, pull-behind campers and other junk falling under the ordinance. The council tabled those provisions for more investigation.

In other business, the council:

o Approved charging assessments to property taxes for residents with unpaid utility bills.

o Approved charging assessments to property taxes for unpaid municipal charges, such as lawn mowing and tree trimming performed by the city.

o Approved donating $500 to the Welcome/Sherburn “Shop with a Cop” program and donating $250 to the after-prom committee.

o Discussed new carpet for the liquor store. The manager reported it is difficult to find red carpet. The council tabled the expense until the manager can get more information.

o Learned leaf vacuuming will be done next week, the last week for the service.

o Declared a merry-go-round to be excess property so it can be donated or sold. A defibrillator also was declared excess property so it can be donated to the Ceylon Fire Department.

o Thanked the city clerk for doing double duty while the city administrator was on leave and approved an increase in pay for those 400 hours.

o Learned the City Attorney will be retiring. The council discussed replacing him with a firm from Jackson.

o Learned Mayor Ross has appointed a committee to investigate playground equipment to be added to the parks. The council thanked residents who serve on the committee: Jackie Auringer, Kristin Shane, Lisa Lange, Lacey McNichol and Amber Ballard.

o Learned council member Karlee Hunter has volunteered to investigate what other towns do to help eliminate the loss of revenue from unpaid utility and tax bills. She noted that the amount is considerable per year. The council thanked her for volunteering.

o Learned the next meeting of the City Council will be 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at City Hall.
