Ceylon resident: Parking possibility ‘terrible’

CEYLON — A Ceylon resident expressed concern to the City Council this week about proposed reverse angle parking that could be instituted along Main Street.

The resident had talked to a resident of St. James, which has such parking, and the resident said it is a horrible system.

Reverse angle parking is meant to improve safety of on-street parking. Vehicles preparing to enter a parking space drive slightly past the space, then back in. When leaving, drivers move forward into the traffic lane.

The parking change could be part of the Highway 263 resurfacing project slated for 2021. Plans in Ceylon could include bump-outs, reverse parking and boulevards.

Questions have arisen in Ceylon about whether older residents will want to learn the new parking system.

The council has not finalized a decision on reverse angle parking.

Turning to other business, the council heard from a resident who asked about electrical problems he has faced. These involve dimming and flickering. Officials say the problem has been linked to the rural electrical association. The resident asked about a refund. Council members asked the city clerk to call the REA and inquire about the matter.

In other business, the clerk reported on possible replacement of utility meters, a subsequent upgrade of software and a hand-held meter reader. The $75,000 would not be eligible for an REA loan, so funding would have to be found. The council tabled the issue to find funding sources, while agreeing that the meters need replacing.
