Welcome weighs new ordinance

WELCOME — Welcome City Council this week discussed a proposed ordinance concerning televising the sewer system from each house to the street.

In the end, the council decided to table a vote until the city gathers more information.

In related business, the council discussed the need for a bigger pump at the Hobb Street pump station, and approved the purchase of a 6-inch used certified pump from an online auction, with price not to exceed $5,000.

Councilman Scott Morrow reported it may be possible to use a valve to stem the flow of extra water that comes with rainfalls like the city had this spring. The council will consider this solution.

The council also discussed the broken camera used to televise sewer pipes, and noted a joint powers meeting to be held in October. Council member Kim Holm suggested a joint powers meeting be held when something breaks, and said a solution needs to come sooner rather than later.

Holm also asked about the location of dumpsters and Porta Potties during the festival weekend. Officials suggest they be located by the post office. Gerhardt’s offered to put some behind its building. The Beauty Shop volunteered to have one on its side of the street.

The council then discussed the new fire hall design, and how to incorporate City Hall as part of the building.

There is water and sewer near the property proposed for the fire hall, and donation of the property is being worked out.

The architect’s design for a steel building similar to a pole barn would cost $55,000. Another architect’s design for a precap design is for $10,000. The council approved initiating the design process and pledged one-half of the $55,000 for the city’s part of the structure.

City employees said they will have the park ready for the festival weekend, and also a street sweeper, if necessary. Council members suggested using part-time help or a Sentence to Service crew to help keep up with the mowing, if necessary.

The next council meeting will be 6 p.m. July 16 at City Hall.
