Book fair coming soon

SHERBURN — Grilled burgers with all the trimmings will be served 6-8 p.m. tonight at the Sherburn American Legion. The cost is only $7. Everyone is welcome to stop by.

A “Lunch and Learn” event will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Sherburn Senior Citizens Center.

CREST and Temperance Lake Ridge will sponsor the presentation, which will feature Meghan Kern from the State Society of the Blind. She will speak about eye diseases and the devices that can help as our eyesight diminishes with age.

Following the program, a soup and sandwich lunch with a Valentine dessert will be served. A donation will be accepted to help defray the cost of the meal.

This event is open to anyone who would like to attend.

The American Legion in Sherburn will host its monthly steak and shrimp supper from 5-8 p.m. Saturday evening. The public is always welcome.

The youth of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn invite everyone to a pancake breakfast they are hosting from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. The menu will include pancakes, sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee. There will be a free will donation for the meal.

Sherburn American Legion Auxiliary will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Legion.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will have parent-teacher conferences from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at all Martin County West schools.

February is “I Love to Read” month. During the month, the number of books read by each grade will be tracked and displayed near the main entrance at the Martin County West Elementary School in Trimont. Stop by to view the reading tracker on the wall and see how many books the students have read.

The elementary school in Sherburn also will take part in some fun reading activities during the month. Check out the hallways there to watch their progress as well.

A Scholastic Book Fair will be held Feb. 11-15 in the library at Martin County West Elementary School in Sherburn. The theme for this year’s fair is “Dino-Mite: Stomp, Chomp and Read.”

The fair will be open after school until 5:30 p.m. each afternoon. On Feb. 12, it will be open until 8 p.m. during parent-teacher conferences.

Book fair sales last year enabled our school to get $1,749 in free books from the Scholastic Company. The public is welcome to come purchase books any time during book fair hours or make a donation to the fair. This will help put books into the hands of our children.

Lifeguard training will be offered this spring in Sherburn. Those interested may contact the pool manager by emailing elizabethviesselman@mcwmavericks.org. You must be at least 15 years of age to take the class.
