Man facing murder charges

ST. JAMES — St. James police have arrested 59-year-old Scott Francis Engelbrecht of St. James in the shooting deaths of his wife and her daughter from a previous marriage.

According to a press release from the St. James Police Department:

Police received a 911 call at 5:41 p.m. Saturday from 1124 First Ave. South. The caller reported his grandfather had shot his grandmother.

Responding police officers found and arrested Scott Engelbrecht, who was carrying a 22-calibre rifle at the time. He was taken into custody without incident.

His wife, Joyce Ann Engelbrecht, 67, was found and appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System-St. James, then flown to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. News reports late Monday afternoon indicated Joyce Engelbrecht died Sunday in Rochester.

Police found Rachel Elaine Linder, 43, on the front steps of a neighboring house at 1120 First Ave. South. She was dead from a gunshot wound.

Scott Engelbrecht is being held in Watonwan County on charges of second-degree murder.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation, along with the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office and the Madelia Police Department.
