Filing ends for county offices

FAIRMONT — Filings wrapped up Tuesday for those seeking public office in Martin and Faribault counties. Just one race in the counties is headed for the primary election on Aug. 14.

Two challengers have emerged to battle Dan Schmidtke of rural Fairmont for his District 4 seat on the Martin County Commission. They are Richard Koons of rural Welcome and Neal Potthoff of rural Dunnell. The trio are headed to the primary to narrow the field to two for the general election in November.

In other Martin County news, Clark Berry of Fairmont filed late in the day Tuesday to challenge current Recorder Diane Sanders, who is seeking re-election.

No other challengers have filed for seats in Martin County, but five current office-holders have. They are: District 2 Commissioner Tom Mahoney of Fairmont, Sheriff Jeff Markquart, County Attorney Terry Viesselman, Auditor/Treasurer Jim Forshee and Surveyor Ben Madsen.

Meanwhile in Faribault County, there is one contested race. Dru Martin of rural Easton has filed to challenge Tom Loveall of rural Winnebago for the District 4 commissioner seat. Loveall is the incumbent.

Otherwise, five incumbents in Faribault County are running unopposed. They are District 2 Commissioner Greg Young, Auditor/Treasurer John Thompson, Recorder Sheryl Asmus, Sheriff Michael Gormley and County Attorney Kathryn Karjala-Curtis.

In Fairmont, filings for city and school races begin July 31 at City Hall and the school district administrative office, respectively. Those filings close Aug. 14.

Three school board seats are up for election this year. They are currently held by Del Ellis, Danielle Schutz and Rufus Rodriguez.

As for the city, wards 1 and 3 and the mayor’s seat are up for election. Debbie Foster is the current mayor. Bruce Peters represents Ward 1, while the Ward 3 seat is held by Jim Zarling.
