Rohman, Jagodzinske to wrestle in D-II, D-III nationals

Blake Jagodzinske

FAIRMONT — A pair of former Martin County Red Bull high school wrestling legends will literally be shooting on the canvas for individual All-American honors and national championships Friday and Saturday.

Augsburg University junior Blake Jagodzinske will make his individual nationals-qualifying debut in the NCAA Division III Championships at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, at noon on Friday.

Meanwhile, Augustana University junior Jaxson Rohman will step to center circle at Hartman Arena in Wichita, Kansas, during the 11 a.m. morning session of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships on Friday.

The No. 4-seeded Rohman (19-4) will square off in the first full round of the 125-pound bracket against Central Missouri’s Jacob Tangpricha (9-7). The winner between Rohman and Tangpricha will tie up with the winner between University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Logan Seliga (10-2) and Colorado Mesa’s Dayson Torgerson (18-9) in Friday night’s championship quarterfinals that start at 6 p.m.

The NCAA Division II nationals open with the semifinals and wrestlebacks at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the championship bouts set for 8 p.m.

Rohman, who will make his third consecutive appearance in the national competition, captured runner-up national honors and All-American accolades at 125 in 2023.

The Red Bulls’ all-time career wins leader and two-time Minnesota high school state champion recently earned All-NSIC first-team honors earlier this month.

The Trimont native posted a 2-1 record to earn runner-up honors during the NCAA Super Region V Tournament en route to meriting a national berth.

Nearly 670 miles across the Midwest, Jagodzinske (16-6) will lock up against Ithaca’s Wenchard Pierre-Louis (3-1) in the Division III 157-pound preliminaries on Friday in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The winner between Jagodzinske and Pierre-Louis advances to tie up against Alvernia University’s Jason Rezac (4-1) in Friday’s first full round during the noon session.

Session 2 of Friday’s action starts at 7 p.m., with Session 3 scheduled for an 11 a.m. start on Saturday. The Division III championship finals are slated for 8 p.m. Saturday night.

The Sherburn native earned his first national individual bid by placing second during the regional tournament. Jagodzinske also played a key role in Augsburg capturing its 21st straight regional championship earlier in March.

The 2023 NWCA Division III Scholar All-American has compiled an impressive three-year collegiate record of 60-14 at the Minneapolis-based campus.

A down-to-the-wire, one-point decision.

The No. 5-seeded Stewartville Tigers scratched the No. 4-seeded St. Peter Saints by a 47-46 decision during the Minnesota State High School League’s Class AAA state girls basketball quarterfinals on Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Audrey Shindelar connected on a 2-point basket in the lane to stake Stewartville to a 47-44 lead with 1:16 remaining in regulation.

Abby Maloney countered for Big South Conference power St. Peter by converting Maddie Kamm’s assist into a 2-pointer in the paint to narrow the Saints’ gap to 47-46 with 1:04 left in regulation.

After a Stewartville missed shot, St. Peter fired a last-second shot that did not connect to send the hard-working Saints to today’s 2 p.m. consolation semifinal against Minneapolis Roosevelt at the Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia University campus in St. Paul.

Minnesota State University-Mankato basketball commit Rhyan Holmgren topped St. Peter’s state effort by netting 14 points to complement grabbing five rebounds and distributing four assists.

Maloney produced 12 points, six boards and three steals for the Saints, Kylie Southworth hit four 3-pointers to pace her 12-point outing, while Kamm contributed six points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Class AAA state quarterfinal featured four lead changes and three ties.
