No. Union’s Von Bank 13th at state golf meet

Olivia Von Bank

BOONE, Iowa — North Union senior Olivia Von Bank nearly earned all-state individual honors during her first-ever appearance at the Iowa Class 1A golf tournament at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.

Von Bank penciled in an opening-round of 46-42-88 on Thursday to earn a share of seventh place out of the 74-player girls field in Boone, Iowa.

Von Bank generated a steady mix of pars, connecting for half of her eight during Day 1 on Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 7. The North Union senior standout then closed with a strong performance, highlighted by pars on Nos. 11, 14, 15 and 18 on Thursday.

Von Bank followed with a second-round score of 51-47-98 to cap her two-day state outing with a 186 to capture 13th place individually on Friday. Von Bank netted pars on Nos. 11 and 12 to close out her esteemed high school golf career.

“Three strokes and three places from a top-10 showing and all-state recognition. That’s pretty good for her first time playing at state,” said Warriors’ assistant coach — and Olivia’s proud father — Jack Von Bank. “Now it’s back to Swea City tonight to play softball against Forest City.

“There’s no rest for Iowa high school athletes,” Jack Von Bank said with a chuckle.

Grundy Center’s Abbie Lindeman overcame a two-shot deficit after Thursday’s opening round to nip New London’s Taylor Phillips for the Iowa Class 1A state girls golf championship. Lindeman fired a Day 1 score of 80 before rallying for a 79 on Friday to eke out the 159-160 decision over Phillips. Phillips carded a runner-up mark of 78-82.

Bishop Garrigan golfer Avery Lichter climbed one spot after Day 1 to capture the bronze medal at Cedar Pointe Golf Course on Friday. Lichter closed her two-day event with a third-place 86-82-168.
