Fairmont 14U takes second
RICHFIELD — The Fairmont Cardinal Power 14U softball team placed second in last weekend’s state tournament in Richfield.
Cardinal Power started the tournament with a come-from-behind win over Mendota Heights, 5-4.
Fairmont started the final inning behind 4-1, then Haleigh Grotzinger singled before Saige Leiding and Ella Klunder hit back to back doubles to cut the lead.
Makayla Lowry followed with a bunt single before Ilana Moeller singled and Abi Sundeen brought in the winning run with a single of her own.
Brylee Miller and Gabby Leiding pitched for Fairmont.
Cardinal Power moved on to face St. Michael-Albertville and won 4-3 after entering the final inning down 3-1.
Klunder, Lowry and Moeller all singled, then Sundeen doubled to bring in the walk-off run.
Miller and Gabby Leiding pitched again for Fairmont.
In their third game Saturday, Cardinal Power faced Richfield and won 9-4. Fairmont scored two runs in the first inning and led the whole way.
Keira Benck went three-for-three with a run scored, while Miller walked twice and scored two runs.
Mariah Moeller had two singes and was hit by a pitch.
Miller and Gabby Leiding worked the circle again for the Cardinals.
Fairmont played three more games Sunday, starting with a 6-1 loss against Winona Winstars Velocity.
Sundeen doubled, while Benck, Grotzinger and Lowry singled.
Miller and Gabby Leiding continued their pitching combination.
Fairmont moved on to face North Polars Hernandez in its second game Sunday, notching another comeback win. This one, 6-5.
Cardinal Power entered the bottom of the fifth down 5-3, then took three walks before Gabby Leiding doubled to bring in two runs before Miller singled to bring in the winning run.
Miller and Gabby Leiding didn’t only power the offense, they combined to pitch the full game for Fairmont.
Cardinal Power then moved into the tournament’s championship matchup, facing Winona WinStars Velocity once again. WinStars Velocity won 5-1 to take the championship.
Gabby Leiding, Saige Leiding, Lowry and Ilana Moeller all singled, while Saige Leiding and Sundeen added a double each. Gabby Leiding pitched the full game.
