Martins sweep split twinbill
The Fairmont Martins beat Adrian 14-1 during a run-rule shortened five-inning game, then made the trip from Adrian to Worthington and beat Worthington 9-5 during split doubleheader action Sunday.
In the Martins’ opening matchup, a nine-run fifth inning led Fairmont to its shortened win.
Ethan Hurn, Adam Schmidt and Dalen Keltgen each had a hit in the inning, with Keltgen knocking a double, while Levi Becker and Kaiden Musser each had two hits to help power Fairmont’s offense.
Josh Smith earned the win on the mound with four innings pitched.
Smith did not allow a baserunner through the first three innings.
Two walks and two hits led to Adrian’s solo run in the fourth.
Smith struck out seven.
Schmidt pitched the final inning, striking out two and walking one.
Eli Anderson had two hits, including a double and scored a run, while Hurn had two hits and two runs scored.
Lance Becker hit a two-RBI triple in the first inning, while Schmidt had two hits, including a double, a run scored and one RBI.
Levi Becker had three hits and two runs scored, while Musser notched three hits and two runs scored.
Jack Hested added a double and a run scored, while Carter Bell walked and scored a run.
Keltgen added two hits and two runs scored.
In Game 2 the Martins scored three in the first and five in the third to build their advantage.
Anderson led off the first with a walk, then back-to-back infield hits from Musser and Lance Becker loaded the bases. Hurn grounded out for an RBI, then Musser scored on a wild pitch before a Levi Becker sacrifice fly scored Lance Becker.
Anderson led off the third with a walk as well, then stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.
Musser was hit by a pitch before Lance Becker walked. Both scored on a Hurn double.
Levi Becker singled then both he and Hurn scored on a Jack Kosbab single.
The Martins scored their final run in the seventh when Levi Becker reached base on an error, stole second, then scored on a Hested RBI single.
Hested earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings. He allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits and no walks, while setting down one Worthington player on strikes.
Hurn pitched the final two innings, striking out two, walking one and hitting one batter in scoreless relief.
Worthington scored twice in the first on a two-run homerun.
Worthington scored another three runs in the third.
Two leadoff singles, a two-RBI double and an RBI single led to the offensive outburst, but Worthington was unable to overcome the Martins’ advantage.
Fairmont plays host to Mountain Lake at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Fairmont.
