Area roundup: Cardinals golf wraps up the spring

PREP GOLF
BUFFALO LAKE – The Fairmont boys and girls golf teams had their last competition of the 2026 season at the Oakdale Golf Club. Both teams competed in Day 2 of the Section 3AA Tournament. The boys had three individuals in the hunt, Jalin Jackson, Klay Bemmer, and Chase Haugen, while the girls did enough on Day 1 to qualify as a team. Here are the results from Fairmont’s Wednesday morning.
Beemer and Haugen wrapped up their tournament in 26th place overall, shooting a combined 168 each. Jackson got 32nd with his 170. Haugen shot 10 over on Day 2, while Beemer and Jackson finished at 12 and 13 over, respectively.
The Fairmont girls finished the section in fourth place behind Minnewaska Area (637), Marshall (716) and New London-Spicer (731). Leslie Zarling got ninth place individually with her combined score of 185, while teammate Katherine Zelaya got 10th after finishing one stroke behind. Carly Gustafson wrapped up the top three with her overall score of 199.
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
ST. PETER – Two Fairmont track and field athletes have already punched their ticket to the 2026 Class AA State Meet with their performances at Day 1 of the Section 2AA Championships on Wednesday morning. Addison Folkerts placed first in the section for her discus toss of 108-03, and Jase Meade peaked over 13-07 for his pole vault, placing third in the section and earning another trip to state.
The Cardinals also had several other individuals qualify for Day 2 of this competition. This will take place on Friday morning, back at Gustavus Adolphus College, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Addison Toothaker and Tavian Harvey also moved up further in the Fairmont program’s top 10 list for the 100-meter sprint. Toothaker’s 12.94 placed eighth in the meet and is now third all-time. Harvey moved to seventh all-time after his 11.20, which also placed eighth. Joining Toothaker and Harvey in making Fairmont program history was Dakota Wiley. Wiley finished first in the 400-meter sprint with a personal best time of 50.90. It stands as the ninth-best all-time. Cooper Gudahl nabbed a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run after finishing with a time of 2:01.74. Finally, Nathaliah Johnson placed eighth in the 200-meter sprint, finishing with a mark of 27.14.
PREP SOFTBALL
PA 5, NU 3
POCAHONTAS – Pocahontas Area scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push past North Union 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Ainsley Ulrich started for the Warriors and tossed all six innings. She allowed six hits, with just two of the five allowed runs being earned. Brylie Deim had two hits for North Union. Ulrich, Shallie Walders, and Maisey Bierstedt each had a single, while Ariana Giddings had a double. Lauren Hoover pitched a complete game for the Indians and didn’t disappoint. She fanned 11 batters while allowing those six hits.
North Union (0-1) will take on Okoboji this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Swea City.
PREP BASEBALL
NU 8, WBM 7
BANCROFT – Six runs in the third inning were all North Union baseball needed to fend off a pesky West Bend Mallard squad during Tuesday afternoon’s contest at Bancroft Memorial Park. Cooper Hoye, Donnie Stevens and Collin Kruse each had two RBIs. Hoye was the only Warrior to finish with multiple hits. Casey Rezac, Cole Nicoson and Castor Kollasch also picked up a base knock. North Union finished with seven strikeouts and four walks. Kollasch threw most of the four North Union arms, finishing with two and two-thirds innings pitched and two earned runs.
The Warriors (1-1) face off against Okoboji this Thursday back at Bancroft Memorial Park. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
