JCC hoopsters topple MCW, 76-59

SHERBURN — Thirty nine total fouls, three technical fouls, 47 combined free throw attempts.

Jackson County Central came out on top 76-59 over Martin County West during a contact-filled nonconference basketball game Thursday in Sherburn.

Although five players ended the matchup with four fouls, the Huskies’ Rudy Voss was the lone competitor to foul out, exciting after being called for consecutive technical fouls with just under six minutes remaining. Voss still led the Huskies with 27 points and neared a triple double with nine rebounds and seven assists.

Wyatt Geistfeld led the Mavericks with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and had a co-game high three blocks.

The fouls began adding up after the Huskies’ Parker Benda was called for the first of JCC’s three technical fouls.

Tanner Sinn went to the line for the Mavericks, shooting for the foul called on the previous rebound, and made one of two. Then, Zach Anderson shot and made two free throws for the technical. The three free throws brought the Mavericks to within 62-46 with 7:19 left.

Anderson blocked a Huskie shot, which Angel Reyes grabbed before passing up court to Karson Janssen for a layup, then Voss answered with one of his six trifectas to bring the JCC lead to 65-48.

Jack Brinkman grabbed the rebound of the next MCW shot and passed the ball to Voss for a fastbreak. Voss sprinted down the court before being called for a charge, leading to a disagreement with the referees and his back-to-back technicals. Zach Anderson then hit two of four tries from the free throw line for the technicals to bring the Mavericks within 15 at the 5:50 juncture.

MCW head coach Cliff Anderson said he had the Mavericks focus on staying composed when the hard fouls started.

“We just said ‘you’ve got to keep your composure and just keep battling,'” Cliff Anderson said. “In a game like that, both teams could have turned it into a slugfest. I thought our kids did a little bit better job of keeping their composure and not letting things bother us. I’m proud of our kids and how they acted on the court.”

The teams combined for 18 free throw attempts the rest of the way, with the Huskies staying at least 15 points ahead.

The first half was played at a much quicker pace than the second, with JCC taking a 50-30 lead into halftime.

The Huskies jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes with Andrew Hesebeck contributing two points, Brinkman swooshing two 3s and Dominic Bargfrede making two attempts from the charity stripe.

Tanner Sinn used a Reyes assist to break the Huskies’ run with a midrange jumper at the 14:12 mark of the opening half. The Mavericks fought back within 15-9 after Derek Dunlop hit a floater and Geistfeld drove the lane for back-to-back layups, converting a traditional three-point play on the second.

JCC then went on a 17-2 run over a five-minute span near the end of the half.

Bargfreded hit consecutive layups, then Brinkman sank another 3 before Voss scored eight consecutive points. Voss used a Brinkman alley-oop attempt for a layup, then converted a traditional three-point play before turning a full-court press steal into a left-wing 3. Hesebeck completed the run when he grabbed a defensive rebound and took the ball coast-to-coast for 2.

The Mavericks fought back at the end of the half with Reyes and Geistfeld driving the lane to combine for 12 consecutive Maverick points before Zach Anderson used a Geistfeld post-entry assist for a high floater.

Cliff Anderson said the Mavericks have a couple of things to work on coming to the end of the regular season.

“I thought our effort was, again, tremendous,” Cliff Anderson said. “We need to clean up a few things before the playoffs. You can’t shoot 17 of 30 from the free throw line and expect to beat a good team like Jackson. And then, we were 2 of 15 from the 3-point line, if you’re gonna win big games, you have to shoot the ball a little better or get to the rim more. … Jackson is well coached and a very good team.”

With 31 seconds left in the first half, Hesebeck used a Voss assist for a layup, scoring his 1,000th career point. The game paused for a minute while Hesebeck enjoyed a moment with his teammates and earned congratulations from the Mavericks’ players and coaches. Hesebeck ended the matchup with a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds.

At halftime, the 1970 Sherburn Raiders undefeated state championship team was honored. Five players, John Tirevold, Jeff McCarron, John Theobald, Pete Eiden and Kent Anderson where all in attendance as well as four 1970 Sherburn cheerleaders, a couple of 1970 Jackson players and the Jackson coach, the team Sherburn beat to go to state.

The Mavericks (18-7, 7-5 Valley) play at Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 7:15 p.m. Saturday for their final game of the regular season. Cliff Anderson said with the Section 2A tournament upcoming, he’s glad the Mavericks face tough opponents to end the year.

“This is a good game for us to get ready for playoffs, just like Saturday will be with good competition,” Cliff Anderson said. “We’ll just keep working hard and we’ll get there.”

The win marks the Huskies’ (16-5, 9-3 Big South) 12th in their past 15 games. JCC hits the road to face Blue Earth Area in a Big South Conference matchup at 2:15 p.m Saturday.
