New Ulm boys hockey ices Fairmont Area

FAIRMONT — Four New Ulm players amassed at least three points during the Eagles’ 16-1 Big South Conference win over Fairmont Area.

Noah Wilmes, Nolan Drill, Glavine Schugel and Teagan Kamm combined for 18 total points in the win Tuesday in Fairmont.

Wilmes scored off a Drill assist for the first goal of the game, then Drill scored off a Wilmes assist for the second. Schugel scored his first of four goals to close out the first period after Keagan Schiro scored, putting the Eagles ahead 4-0.

Wilmes scored back-to-back goals off Drill assists to start the second period, then Schugel scored unassisted before Kamm used a Schugel assist to put New Ulm ahead 8-0.

AJ Arneson scored off a Schugel assist to extend the lead with 8:18 left in the middle period, but Thomas Claeys would not let Fairmont Area be shut out.

Claeys collected the rebound off a Carter Beebe shot when he stretched as far as he could, pulling the puck into the net as Claeys slid past it.

Schugal then scored back-to-back goals to start the third period, with the first coming off a Kamm assist, before he assisted Kamm to put the Eagles ahead 12-1 with 5:02 left.

Josh Gulden then scored twice for the Eagles in the final five minutes, including a goal with one second left, while Ethan O’Connor scored to give the Eagles their 16 goals.

Brycen Lutterman got Fairmont Area on the third-period scoreboard when he collected the rebound off a Carter Olson shot and scored with 1:11 left.

Wilmes totalled three goals and an assist, while Drill had three assists and a goal.

Kamm totaled two goals and an assist and Schugal compiled both a hat trick and a playmaker with four goals and three assists.

“There were a couple of kids that wanted it,” Cardinal head coach Dylan VanBrocklin said of his team’s effort. “We started off decent … we kept them in their zone for a while, we got shots, then we kind of just gave up.”

New Ulm outshot Fairmont Area 56-20 in the matchup.

Fairmont Area (3-17, 1-12 Big South) plays host to Redwood Valley at 7 p.m. Friday for a game VanBrocklin said will play an important role in section seeding.

“It’s a very important game,” VanBrocklin said. “They’ve (Cardinals) got to get focused starting right now. They’ve got to be ready, they’ve got to want it. We’ve just got to play the way we did those first two minutes. If we play like that, I don’t think we can lose if we play the whole game like that.”

New Ulm (14-6-1, 12-1 Big South) plays host to Luverne at 7 p.m. Thursday.
