7th-grade boys basketball 1st, 2nd at tourney

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals seventh-grade boys basketball teams placed first and second during the St. James tournament on Jan. 11.

The Fairmont ‘A’ team won the black bracket by posting a 31-22 first-round victory over St. Peter, a 33-28 semifinal win over St. James and a 27-20 decision over Jackson County Central.

Hadan Toomer produced 23 points during the three-game span to top the Cardinals.

Nolan Schultze and Harman Schrunk supplied 19 and 16 points, respectively, for Fairmont ‘A’ during the tournament.

The Fairmont ‘B’ squad netted runner-up honors in the red bracket by doubling up St. Peter 28-14, eked out a 31-28 overtime semifinal win over St. James and lost a 41-15 decision to JCC in the finals.

Jacob Petrowiak generated 22 points during the three-game span to pace the Cardinals’ winning effort.

Hunter Johnson tallied 18 points, while both Micah Vaughn and Caleb Chambers contributed 12 points apiece.

Fairmont’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams split two games with Jackson County Central last Thursday.

The Cardinals’ ‘A’ squad doubled up the Huskies, 20-10. Hadan Toomer netted five points for Fairmont, while Oliver Tordsen chipped in four points.

JCC doubled the score on Fairmont, 24-12, during B-team action Thursday.

Hunter Johnson paced the Cardinals’ winning performance with four points.

Fairmont travels to Blue Earth today for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff.
