MCA gymnastics meet moved to tonight

WELCOME — The Martin County Area Magic’s Big South Conference gymnastics dual meet with the New Ulm Eagles on Friday night has been rescheduled for tonight due to the expected inclement weather.

The Magic will play host to the Eagles, starting with the junior varsity competition at 6 p.m. tonight in Welcome, with the varsity meet following at around 7 p.m.

FSA spring soccer registration Jan. 26

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Soccer Association will hold spring registration at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Five Lakes Elementary School in the cafeteria reached through door No. 21.

The signup is for boys and girls competing in the U11-U17 divisions.

There will also be registration for U18, although current seniors will not be able to play during the spring schedule.

Red Bulls’ freshmen wrestlers qualify for state

FAIRMONT — The Martin County Red Bulls freshman wrestling team captured runner-up accolades during Monday’s Region 1 Team State Qualifier 9GL Meet at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.

Jackson County Central, which edged the Red Bulls in the regional championship meet 39-32, will join the Red Bulls and third-place finisher Faribault at Saturday’s state competition in Mora.

Martin County Area opened the regional with a 48-25 win over Owatonna before flattening Zumbrota-Mazeppa 59-12 to reach the finals.

Jackson County Central defeated Faribault 44-32 in pool play before crushing Albert Lea 64-9.

Fairmont 7th-graders win tournament

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals’ seventh-grade Red girls basketball team captured the Owatonna tournament last weekend.

Ellie Ortega and Brylee Miller each scored 10 points to guide the Cardinals to a first-round 32-6 win over Northfield.

Ava Rodning, Kennedy Becker and Meredith Nemmers each contributed four points to Fairmont’s winning effort.

Nemmers produced a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace Fairmont’s 55-12 semifinal rout over Owatonna Silver.

Miller netted 14 points, Ortega tallied eight points, Saige Leiding scored six, while Carys Gudahl pulled down six rebounds in the Game 2 win.

Miller scored nine points to top a balanced attack as Fairmont downed Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 34-25 for the tournament crown.

Ortega and Leiding contributed six points apiece to the Cardinals’ victory in the tourney championship.
