Maple River edges Fairmont in 3A tennis quarterfinal

OWATONNA — The No. 6-seeded Maple River Eagles swept the doubles bracket, including a pair of three-setters, and netted a win at No. 1 singles to pace a 4-3 upset victory over the No. 3-seeded Fairmont Cardinals during Tuesday’s Section 3A Team Meet tennis quarterfinals at the Owatonna Indoor Courts.

Maple River advances to face the Class A No. 8-ranked and No. 2-seeded St. James Area Saints in a sectional team semifinal at the Swanson Tennis Center on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter, following the completion of Thursday’s 9 a.m. semifinal between Blue Earth Area and Luverne.

Fairmont, which posted a 5-2 regular-season victory over Maple River on Sept. 20, ended its dual-meet season with a 15-8 record.

The Cardinals, however, posted straight-set shutout wins over the Eagles at the Nos. 2-4 singles positions on Tuesday.

Briana Joseph netted a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Mariah Lippert at the No. 2 spot in the Fairmont bracket, Maggy Totzke breezed to back-to-back love sets over Lauren Maas at the No. 3 position, while Lauren Green needed the minimum dozen games to best Leah Proehl at the No. 4 singles spot.

Perennial state qualifier Vanessa Barkosky netted Maple River’s lone singles point by serving a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Claire Nemmers at the No. 1 position, while the Eagles’ No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bruegger and Olivia Pfeffer shut out Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis, 6-0, 6-0.

Ella Sohre and Sophie Christian, along with Maple River teammates Isabella Nelson and Kelsey Jaeger, both required third sets to complete the doubles sweep to cap the 4-3 team decision.

Sohre and Christian generated a 6-3 opening-set win over Emily Hagen and Ellie Hernes before the Fairmont tandem rallied for a 7-5 second-set triumph. Sohre and Christian then regrouped to edge Hagen and Hernes in the decisive third set, 6-4.

The Cardinals’ Libby Totzke and Anika Haugen won their first set against Nelson and Jaeger at No. 3 doubles by a 6-3 margin before the Maple River duo rallied to eke out a 7-6 (7-3) win in a second-set tiebreaker. Nelson and Jaeger then fended off Totzke and Haugen in the third set, 7-5.

Two singles players and two doubles teams from Fairmont will compete in the Section 3A Individual Meet starting at 9 a.m. Friday at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.
