Williamson, Becker start seasons at same venue

FAIRMONT — Together again.

Former Martin County West pitcher Brandon Williamson and former Fairmont second baseman Luke Becker made their 2019 Northwest League debuts in a three-game series between their respective minor league teams on Friday night.

Williamson, who signed a $925,000 bonus last Thursday with the Seattle Mariners’ organization, was assigned to the Everett Aquasox in Everett, Washington, for his professional baseball debut.

Meanwhile, Becker returned to the Tri-City Dust Devils — an affiliate of the San Diego Padres — for his second consecutive season in Pasco, Washington.

The Aquasox shut out the Dust Devils, 5-0, in Friday night’s opener at Tri-City’s home park, Gesa Stadium, with neither Williamson nor Becker in the lineup.

Everett outslugged Tri-City, 7-3, Saturday night in Game 2, with Becker getting the start at second base. Becker went 1-for-4 with a fifth-inning single offensively, and helped turn a double play on the defensive side.

The Aquasox and Dust Devils squared off in another late West Coast contest that did not finish before the Sentinel’s press deadline Sunday night.

If Williamson did not pitch Sunday night, the hard-throwing left-hander out of Texas Christian University will look for his first minor-league stint on the mound when Everett travels to Boise tonight for an 8:15 p.m. CDT start.

Becker and Tri-City will play host to Hillsboro in a 9:15 p.m. CDT starting time tonight back at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Washington.
