Martins post win over Tracy, fall to Milroy in split twinbill

FAIRMONT — A split diamond doubleheader produced split results.

The Fairmont Martins derailed the Tracy Engineers by a 3-1 decision during Sunday’s opening amateur baseball game in Northrop before the Milroy Irish had a bit of luck in edging the Martins, 6-5, during Game 2 at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

Right-hander Jack Hested scattered six hits over six scoreless innings to earn the Game 1 win for Fairmont. Hested recorded one strikeout and did not issue a base-on-balls.

Lance Becker produced a team-leading three hits, including a run-scoring double, for the Martins, while teammate Dalen Keltgen contributed a two-run single to the performance.

The Milroy Irish then outlasted Fairmont by one run during the second game of the split doubleheader.

Spencer Chirpich, Ethan Hurn and Christian Petschke each generated three hits to fuel the Martins’ offensive performance.

Tyler Tennyson drilled a double and a triple to generate two RBIs for the hometown batting order, while Levi Becker and Jon Traetow each contributed RBI doubles.

Tennyson allowed four runs on three hits and registered one strikeout in five innings pitched to receive a no decision against the Irish.

Traetow stepped to the hill and hurled two shutout and hitless innings for Fairmont, while Hurn gave up one run in one inning of work to absorb the loss.

The Martins (10-2 overall, 9-1 in the First Nite League) travel to Jackson next Sunday to face the Bulls at 2 p.m. at Wacker Field.

Note: The Fairmont American Legion Post 36 baseball team’s doubleheader at Waseca tonight has been postponed.
