TRIMONT — Martin County West guard Hunter Wrightson delivered a game-best 15-point performance to power the Mavericks to a 52-27 triumph over the Luverne Cardinals during nonconference basketball action Saturday in Trimont.

Wrightson connected on 2 of 3 shots from 3-point range and sank all five of her free throws to help pace the home team’s balanced scoring effort.

Alyssa Williamson contributed 10 points and distributed three assists as the Mavericks improved to 4-0 overall to open the 2016-17 campaign.

Sierra Williamson delivered eight points and seven rebounds to Martin County West’s winning ways, while teammate Renae Eckmann supplied seven points and seven boards.

Maia Taylor produced four points, grabbed seven rebounds, distributed four assists and pocketed four steals for the Mavericks, while Madison Klima chipped in four points.

Martin County West built a 25-12 halftime lead and never trailed for the duration.

The Mavericks hit 18 of 43 field goals for 41 percent, including 3 of 6 behind the 3-point arc, and sank 13 of 21 free throws for 61 percent.

Martin County West (4-0) plays host to Windom Area on Tuesday night in Trimont.

Boys Basketball

Luverne 62, Martin County West 48 — Layne Curtis netted a co-game-high 19 points to steer the Cardinals to a 14-point non-league win over the Mavericks on Saturday in Trimont.

Cole Claussen contributed 17 points to Luverne’s balanced offensive attack, while teammate Brayden Jacobsma added 13 points.

Josh Bjerken generated a co-game-high 19 points to top the Mavericks, while freshman forward Wyatt Geistfeld produced a double-double performance of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mavericks made 20 of 50 field goals, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range, and sank 5 of 10 free throws on the game.

The Cardinals drilled 10 of 16 shots from 3-point range for 62 percent to complement 14-for-24 shooting from 2-point territory for 58 percent. Luverne only hit 4 of 15 charity tosses.

Martin County West (0-3) travels to Lake Crystal on Tuesday.
