St. James cagers double up MCW

SHERBURN — St. James Area senior teammates Sandin Skow and Brady Stevens have been compiling impressive scoring and rebounding statistics for the last three seasons.

Add sophomore guards Parker Jones and Kobe Mohwinkel, along with senior forward Lucas Fredin, to the mix and Saints head coach Alex Hein likes what he sees on the hardwood court.

Skow collected 13 points and four assists, Stevens produced 12 points and nine rebounds, while Jones chipped in 12 points to power St. James Area to a 63-31 non-league victory over the Martin County West Mavericks on Thursday night in Sherburn.

“Better balanced scoring this year,” said Hein. “It’s nice to have three, four guys scoring in double figures for us this season. Makes us a little more difficult to defend.”

It also didn’t hurt that the Saints had seven different players combine for 10-for-25 shooting — 40 percent — from 3-point range.

Hard-working point guard Josh Bjerken single-handedly kept the Mavericks within striking distance during the game’s first seven minutes.

Bjerken accounted for all 10 of MCW’s initial points, including a game-opening 3-pointer before sinking a pair of free throws, as the home team trailed 19-10 with 10:45 remaining before intermission.

Ryan Witcraft came off the Saints’ bench to hit a trey before Maverick junior Matt Holm answered with a 3-pointer off a Logan Ebeling kickout pass.

Stevens and Jones, however, proved a lethal 1-2 scoring punch for St. James Area during the final six minutes of the opening half. The two Saints combined for 10 points to build a 32-17 halftime edge.

Cam Dressen, who distributed three assists, converted a traditional 3-point play off an assist from Wyatt Geistfeld to account for the Mavericks’ first points of the second half.

Unfortunately, Skow, Mohwinkel and Stevens reeled off a 16-0 offensive surge to put the game out of the Mavericks’ reach at 50-20 with 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

Mohwinkel and Skow swooshed a pair of 3s to trigger the double-digit run that led to both coaches turning over the final 10 minutes to their respective reserves.

Holm finished with five points for the Mavericks, Geistfeld and Andrew Ringnell chipped in four points apiece, while Colby Williamson pulled down a team-best five rebounds.

Mohwinkel and Fredin supplied seven and six points, respectively, for the Saints.
