Tigers eke out OT win over Cardinals

ALBERT LEA – Rachel Rehnelt scored on a penalty kick with 1:09 left in the first overtime to squeeze the Albert Lea Tigers by the Fairmont Area Cardinals, 2-1, in soccer action Monday in Albert Lea.

Trailing 1-0, Fairmont Area’s Abby DeWitt forced OT by converting Lindsey Miles’ assist into the tying goal with 2:18 remaining in regulation.

Callie Hanson scored the Tigers’ first goal at the 32:04 juncture of the opening period.

Goalkeeper Haley Burmeister made 17 saves for the Cardinals, while Kathryn Flaherty had 24 for the Tigers.

Fairmont Area (3-3-1) travels to Mankato Loyola today for a 5 p.m. game.

Albert Lea shut out Fairmont Area, 4-0, in junior varsity action Monday in Albert Lea.

Kaiden Boerner made nine saves for the Cardinals.

Sami Lenort produced two goals and one assist to help engineer Fairmont Area’s 3-0 victory over Albert Lea during C-squad action Monday in Albert Lea.

Maddy Maakestad delivered the assist on Lenort’s first goal of the game before Tegan Roskop doled out the assist on Lenort’s second score. Lenort then distributed the assist on Brooklyn Meyer’s goal.

Fairmont Area’s Kalie Hanna recorded nine saves to earn the shutout victory.
