Fairmont Post 36 edges N.U. Gold; Martins rout Royals

NEW ULM – Fairmont American Legion Post 36 edged New Ulm Gold, 4-3, during opening-round baseball action in the Division I, Sub-State 2 Tournament on Wednesday at Johnson Park in New Ulm.

Tyler Tennyson allowed three earned runs on seven hits, recorded eight strikeouts, issued two walks and hit two batters in nine innings of work to earn the complete-game victory for Fairmont.

Jack Waletich and Nathan Gillis each produced one RBI on the strength of one hit to pace Post 36’s six-hit offensive effort.

Dylan Gerken supplied a double for Fairmont, while teammates Lance Becker, Kale Fritz and Nate Kallenbach each contributed singles.

Fairmont (9-3) plays Jordan at 10:30 a.m. today at Johnson Park in New Ulm. Jordan advanced by edging Sleepy Eye, 7-6. Post 36 also will play a second game today.

Amateur Baseball

Fairmont 13, Ruthton 0 – Right-hander Matt Lytle tossed a complete-game shutout to help power the Martins to a 13-0 rout over the Royals during Game 1 of their best-of-3 First Nite/Gopher League amateur baseball playoff series on Wednesday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

Lytle recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Christian Petschke produced three hits and three RBIs to pace the Martins’ offensive effort, while Adam Schmidt generated two hits and three RBIs.

Spencer Chirpich contributed three hits to Fairmont’s winning ways, while teammates Scott Chirpich, Jay Ruen and Levi Becker each delivered two hits on the playoff clash.

Fairmont (15-5) travels to Ruthton on Friday night for Game 2 via a 7:30 p.m. start.
