Good news, bad news To the Editor: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and legislative leadership have made a budget deal. Most of the details are still a work in progress, but there are a pair of items worth discussing. The good news is we turned out better than I expected in the area of transportation, as the Democrats finally gave up on their 20-cent per gallon gas tax increase ideas. Hy-Vee steps up to help To the Editor: Cardinal Power Fastpitch, the summer girls softball association in Fairmont, recently sold discount punch cards for Papa Murphy’s as a fundraiser. Less than two weeks after we closed our sale, the local Papa Murphy’s closed its doors. This left us in an uncomfortable position in which we still owed for the cards but were discussing the real possibility of having to contact everyone we had sold to provide a refund. The Knights of Columbus silent & live auction was the most successful ever and more than $10,500 was awarded to The Arc Southwest and Martin County Kinship. Thanks to everyone who donated items, attended the event, and contributed time and money to benefit others. Who are the victims? To the Editor: Fairmont City Councilman Tom Hawkins is a victim? And now Councilman Randy Lubenow claims the same? They say their names have been dragged through the mud and they are being treated unfairly. If there was one conclusion I gleaned from the Monday, May 13, meeting of the City Council, it is that clearly these two are not the victims. TDS is in full bloom To the Editor: Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) has often been described as a serious mental condition brought on by hatred of President Donald Trump. TDS causes afflicted persons to act or speak in a totally irrational manner. Democrats, a group of people apparently most often afflicted with TDS, are often noted to be in a state of denial of reality and have repeatedly denied the existence of TDS. Change not always bad To the Editor: What is happening in this community (Fairmont) is utterly ridiculous and could have far-reaching ramifications for our future. Tom Hawkins clearly obtained a majority of votes to be elected councilman at-large for the city. However, the recall committee (representing a small but vocal minority of voters) is now attempting to negate the result of this election because they do not agree with Mr. Hawkins’ ideas.
