Poppies honor, aid vets To the Editor: On Nov. 9, members of the Fairmont American Legion Auxiliary Unit 36 will distribute poppies in Fairmont. Veterans remember the wild flowers blooming in the devastated battlefields of France and Flanders. The basic purpose of Poppy Days is to offer the American public an opportunity to honor those who have and are presently serving for our freedom. Bullying continues To the Editor: On Monday, Oct. 28, I spoke during the open forum portion of the Fairmont City Council meeting. My words were not influenced by any other member of this community. I stood behind my statements that evening and will continue to stand behind them. The outpouring of support from this community has been amazing. A service for veterans To the Editor: As Veterans Day approaches, I wanted to notify the residents of Faribault and Martin County about a benefit that may be available to them from the area’s public transit system, Prairie Lakes Transit. Back in March, the Faribault-Martin County Transit board of directors, comprised of the commissioners from both counties, worked with staff of the transit system and each county’s Veterans Service Office, along with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, to draft a policy for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Women learn to hunt To the Editor: Martin County Pheasants Forever hosted a mentored “Women’s Learn to Hunt Class” on Oct 5-6. It began at the Fairmont Trap Club, with a classroom session, where the women learned safety, handling and proper gun fit. Next, the women had the chance to shoot trap with one-on-one instruction to learn proper shooting technique. Although cold and windy, no one was deterred by the weather and instead continued their evening indoors, where they discussed the new tips they had learned for a better shooting experience. ST. PAUL Minnesota doesn’t close up shop as the leaves change colors — there is so much to be done as temperatures cool and the days grow shorter. Many Minnesotans across the state have been counting down the days to when they could break the blaze orange gear out of the closet, map out the good hunting spots and plan a weekend (or two) with friends and family to get out in the fields.
