Fully informed citizenry is only just To the Editor: There was an open house on Nov. 2nd to inform Fairmont citizens on the proposed Fairmont Community Center. I attended the open house to learn more about this project. I expected to be educated on all costs of my investment, but I was very disappointed. I saw the cost to build the facility, a range of $23-46 million. The range depends upon how much is built and when it is built. Get city council on right track To the Editor: In the 38 years that we have lived in Fairmont, we have never had a political sign in our yard or requested publicly that citizens vote for specific candidates. We feel that this is a very important election for the City of Fairmont and have realized this from past events that occurred this year in our neighborhood. We need the mayor and all council members to work together for the betterment of our City. No to the YMCA To the Editor: I DO NOT support the YMCA. Fairmont cannot afford it now with the recession coming and heating bills going up 30 percent. I have talked to many people that live on their social security checks and cannot afford the YMCA. Now in a few years when Fairmont can get more businesses and have 1,000 more people coming in who can work, then I might say yes but not now when Fairmont is NOT growing, we say NO to the YMCA. Poppy is a tribute to all veterans To the Editor: On November 5, members of the Fairmont American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 36, will be distributing poppies in Fairmont. Veterans remember the wildflowers blooming in the devastated battlefields of France and Flanders. The basic purpose of Poppy Days are to offer the American public an opportunity to honor those that have and are presently serving for our freedom. Fairmont Needs the Community Center To the Editor: Fairmont desperately needs the community center and a year-round, indoor swimming pool. It’s surprising to me a town of this size does not already have this in place. It’s important because it promotes exercise, which increases physical health, mental health, and overall sense of wellbeing. A swimming pool would provide year-round swimming and classes for children, adults, persons with disabilities, and people with pain such as arthritis as swimming provides a joint-friendly form of fitness. Charter Amendments/Ad Misinformation To the Editor: The recently submitted letter to the editor by the Chairman of the Charter Commission stated that “..the commentary included with each ballot item was placed there because of THE COLLECTIVE ACTION OF THE CHARTER COMMISSION.” This is an ERRANT CLAIM because the Commission was not aware of the ad until after it had been completely designed and submitted for publication.
