Government closure over reducing US debt To the Editor: Again, the Republicans are planning to close the government to force spending reductions that will bring down the budget deficit. I agree with deficit reduction and eliminating government waste. Here is a guiding principle that could help Republicans and Democrats negotiate a bi-partisan agreement that is good for the country. Match every $1 in spending reduction that Republicans propose with $2 increase in taxes half of which goes directly to reduce the deficit. Save the Pool To the Editor: Many people are not aware of the numerous excellent opportunities at the Sherburn Community Pool. I want to share with you these benefits in hopes that you will gain a better understanding of how important the pool is to our community and the surrounding area. People of all ages and a variety of needs use the pool for social interaction, physical fitness, and therapy/rehab. Aquatic Park great for the community To the Editor: Thank you to our Fairmont Aquatic Park. I enjoyed every aquacise and deep-water class. All the staff is helpful, polite and hardworking. It is great to have so many people attend all the classes and enjoy our great aquatic park. I brought many of my family and friends again this year. Citizens 4 A Strong Fairmont To the Editor: At the city council meeting on Monday, Aug. 14, Councilor Britney Kawecki from Ward 2, asked Citizens 4 A Strong Fairmont how we are involved in the City and what we are doing to support it. We welcomed the opportunity to describe ourselves more thoroughly in this letter. We are taxpaying citizens. Nearly half of the property taxes each of us pays goes to the City of Fairmont to fund the fire and police departments, the water treatment plant, the street department, storm water management and all the other city functions. City Band season successful To the Editor: Fairmont City Band has just finished a successful 2023 season and that would not be possible without the assistance of many groups and individuals. We'd like to thank the City of Fairmont and the Parks Department for their financial support and help with the band shell and Sylvania Park, the Fairmont Area Schools Music Department for the use of their music and equipment, the Interlaken Heritage Days Committee for providing the concession stand, those individuals that worked behind the scenes to set-up before and put equipment away after the ...

Is this hypocrisy? To the Editor: There is an organization called the Alliance Defending Freedom. I thought good, this group advocates for citizens’ right to make decisions that effect their life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Then I read in the Sentinel that this organization filed a lawsuit to challenge the FDA’s approval of the drug, mifepristone, which was approved 23 years ago. Mifepristone is used to end a pregnancy that is less than 70 days in duration. It is also used to expel the uterine lining when a fetus is lost through natural causes, but the body does not ...
