MCW School Board considers projects
SHERBURN — The Martin County West School Board met on Monday to discuss matters regarding finance and personnel topics.
The financial and enrollment updates were reported by Superintendent Cory Reynolds as 636 total students enrolled (approximately 12 more than budgeted for) and six percent of the finances used to date. The Superintendent also reported about the building project with Bond Sales to Jeffries LLC at a 3.67 percent interest rate with a premium of $5 to $8 million which the taxpayers will not have to pay. She also reported that a first discussion was held with the City of Welcome about the land where the old school is, being owned by the city after the school is demolished and the ball field land owned by the school district in sort of a possible land swap. The discussions will continue and a resolution is hoped to be done by the end of the year.
A lot of questions were posed from the board about the value of the land, income from tournaments at ball field to the school, the cost of maintenance of the ball field, and land north of Welcome School deeded to the city and school district. Reynolds reported that this is just a preliminary discussion so far.
She also mentioned several celebrations in the school district such as 13 new staff members this year, and a successful Kinder Camp event for those new students to Kindergarten to acquaint the students with their room, teacher and routines. There were a record number of participants in the Flag Football CER offering. The High School has a 1:1 device initiative which is going well. The Board also approved the resolution and award of sale for the General Obligation School Building Bond for $64,700,000. The County should have information about the tax amount by December so the Board approved a public hearing regarding the budget and proposed Property Tax for 6 p.m. on Dec. 16at the School District Board meeting.
In other business:
— The board approved Levy Limitation and Certification at the maximum for pay in 2025.
— The board approved the Crisis Management Plan discussed at earlier meetings and policies annual reviews for Title IX Sex nondiscrimination, mandated reporting of maltreatment of vulnerable adults and fund balance policies.
— Reports from the principals and CER director were given. High School is gearing up for Homecoming and parents were assured that children are receiving breakfast even if the bus is later than usual, and CER reported that the pool is emptied and that the upcoming classes of cheer squad, wrestling and dance are busy.
— The board approved the hiring of Rodger Taylor, 6th grade teacher; Sarah Glidden, 4th grade teacher; Mike Thompson, FFA volunteer coach; Madison Klima, Jr. High Volleyball coach;
Nate Klima, Brian Burmeister, and Adam Schorn, as volunteer Football Coaches;
David Wubbena, type 3 driver, and Darla Price, ESP.
The next scheduled meeting of the Martin County West School Board is 6:30 pm on October 21st.
