MCW preps for special meeting

SHERBURN — The Martin County West School Board meeting was held Monday evening. Superintendent, Cori Reynolds, reported that the enrollment was 631 and that the finances were about 75-80 percent of the budgeted $1,405,500+. She also mentioned that the social media information and postcards for information about the building project were done. There will be an open house from 5-7 p.m. on April 29 at the high school in Sherburn. Early voting is underway and may be done 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the district office. The election is May 14. She mentioned that there will be a special meeting of the school board at 5 p.m. today, April 17, with the Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner’s review of the building proposal.

Principal’s reports included the Teen Truth meeting that will be an assembly on April 26 with Brandon McCall, a motivational speaker, about school culture, mental health and substance misuse in schools. This will be for grades 5-12. The high school will have a mock crash in May to talk about safety while driving. The high school is busy working on awards and graduation, too.

The Trimont School is working on testing too and are continuing after-school programs. Later the second graders will go to Trimont to work on transition from Sherburn to Trimont. Sherburn Elementary School has had success with the extra reading program this year. Kindergarten Round up is coming soon. There will be a three day camp this summer for preschoolers to transition to the kindergarten room, etc. Summer school is planned also.

In other business, one public comment was given by a teacher, Noah Anderson, requesting better technology system with a one-to-one system. He mentioned some of the ways the system now is not functioning properly and mentioned that the investment may be large but the help to students and teachers would be tremendous. IPad use now is appreciated but need more system renovation.

In other news:

— The board approved hiring Summer Firchau as secondary English Instructor and approved leave for Tom Studer until the summer.

— The board approved the 2024-2025 school calendar.

— The board approved appointing Election Judges for the May 14 special election.

— Donations were approved with thanks from: Federated Rural Electric Association, $1,000 for scholarships for CER activities; $1,000 from FREA in celebration of 50 years of ECFE; and $380 from FREA for math curriculum laminating supplies for Sherburn Elementary.

— The board accepted the resignation of Cindy Gurdet after years as the cook in the food program.

— MCW Community Education and Recreation program is excited about the early childhood screening April 16.

— The indoor pool had a pump maintenance problem and had to be closed for one day. There are many things planned for the summer.

The next meeting of the MCW School Board is scheduled 6:30 p.m. on May 20. There will be a

special meeting at 5 p.m. on April 17 with the MN Dept of Educ. Commissioner regarding the

proposed building project. There will also be an open house informational meeting on April 29 at the high school about the building project referendum.
