Fairmont’s city administrator resigns

FAIRMONT– Fairmont City Administrator Cathy Reynolds announced her resignation on Tuesday. Reynolds has been with the city for nearly three years.

She was hired to fill the position following the termination of Mike Humpal in November 2019. In the interim, former city engineer Troy Nemmers handled administration duties before a prior council hired Mark Sievert to work as interim city administrator in December 2019. Reynolds was hired as Fairmont’s city administrator in May of 2020.

Reynolds brought with her a law degree from the University of Denver, College of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Colorado State University.

Before coming to Fairmont, she served as the operations manager of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District in Minnetonka.

Her other experiences include serving as the court services manager for the Escambia, Fla., county clerk of the circuit court and comptroller; and as an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Energy. She is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

On Tuesday, Reynolds said, “There are so many opportunities in Fairmont and the city has great staff working for it in the best interest of the community. Leaving Fairmont has been a challenging decision. I’ve become the scapegoat for a lot of the instability and in order to help the community progress and move forward, I have made the decision to leave.”

Discussion on next steps will be held at the next Fairmont City Council meeting on April 24.
