On Friday, which was the last day to do so, former councilman Randy Lubenow of 217 S. Hampton Street filed for the open Ward 3 seat in Fairmont. On Friday Terry Riggs of 210 S. Elm Street also filed for the Ward 3 seat. The seat was open following the resignation of Deb Foster, who vacated it on March 2. Foster had narrowly defeated Lubenow in the general election last November.

The selection will go to the Fairmont City Council at its March 27 meeting where the council will need to appoint one of the two by majority vote. If the council fails to do so, the decision will go to a special election.
