Speech team earns first place this past weekend

FAIRMONT — On Saturday, Feb. 18, 34 participants of the Fairmont Speech Team competed at The “Scarlet Invitational” Speech Tournament at Mankato West High School in Mankato, Minn. In team sweepstakes, Fairmont took 1st place with 143 points, Mankato West took 2nd place with 106 points, and St. Clair took 3rd place with 78 points.

In the varsity division, in creative expression, senior Lauren Wheeler took 2nd place; in discussion, senior Solveig Senf took 1st place; in dramatic interpretation, junior Selvin Forsythe took 2nd place; in duo interpretation, sophomores Grace Simpson and Oliver Thedens took 1st place, and freshman Bel Lutterman and junior Selvin Forsythe took 2nd place; in extemporaneous reading, sophomore Oliver Thedens took 5th place; in extemporaneous speaking, sophomore Dominick Lund-May took 1st place, junior Andrew Haefner took 2nd place, and freshman Levi Loughmiller took 6th Place; in great speeches, junior Isaiah Lockwood took 1st place, and sophomore Dominick Lund-May took 3rd place; in informative speaking, junior Sydney Blomster took 5th place; in original oratory, junior Isaiah Lockwood took 3rd place, sophomore Alayna Haefner took 4th place, and sophomore Alex Ensrud took 6th place; in prose, freshman Bel Lutterman took 5th place, and freshman Bryanna Petschke took 6th place; in storytelling, sophomore Grace Simpson took 1st place.

In the novice division, in discussion, 7th grader Adriana Leiding took 5th place; in dramatic interpretation, Kayla Szuberski took 2nd place; in informative speaking, freshman Leila Caballero took 3rd place.

One result from the “Crusader Classic” Speech Tournament Feb. 11 in Mankato was unintentionally missed. Sophomore Oliver Thedens took 4th place in varsity extemporaneous reading.

Fairmont Speech Team heads to Mankato on Saturday, Feb. 25, to compete at Mankato East. The Fairmont Speech Team is coached by Kathleen Walker, Erik Walker and Miles Duffey.
