FAIRMONT– On Saturday, Project 1590’s Kids Just Want to Have Fun committee hosted its annual mother-son event in Fairmont. The event, which brought in around 120 people, served as a fundraiser for the organization.

While the event has typically been held at Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont, this year it was held in the Southern Minnesota Education Campus building because Bethel is currently remodeling the space they’ve used in the past.

“It worked out for this year,” committee member Kristy Olson said of holding the event in the SMEC building.

The theme of the event was Not All Heroes Wear Capes and Olson said they had representatives of Mayo Ambulance service, Fairmont Police Department and Fairmont Fire Department present.

“We wanted to highlight the actual heroes of our community,” Olson said.

As many young boys came dressed up as superheroes themselves, they were able to pose for pictures with those from the different departments.

The event also featured a meal, face painting, a photo booth, games and a bouncy house.

The mother-son event, along with the father-daughter dance, which is held in the spring, are the group’s two main fundraising events. However, this past year they added two additional events.

“We had a lot of turnout for the breakfast on the farm event in May. We’re planning on doing that annually,” Olson said of the event which was held in the morning at Heritage Acres in Fairmont.

“The Easter egg hunt was definitely the most well-attended,” Olson said with a laugh.

The Kids Just Want to Have Fun committee is responsible for the indoor playground at Five Lakes Centre and the mini golf course near the Fairmont Aquatic Park.

Olson said the group is currently fundraising for a bike share program, which they hope to have up and running by next spring.
