Board hears update on school play

FAIRMONT– The Fairmont School Board on Tuesday heard from English teacher Sara Gudahl and several students who are cast in the high school’s upcoming spring play.

The students will present a comedy, “The Internet is Distracting– Oh Look! A Kitten!”

Gudahl, who is directing the play, said that back in 2019 they had planned to do the show but haven’t been able to put it on over the past few years due to Covid. She said a handful of the actors were actually previously cast in the show and are excited to finally be in it this year.

“I’m finding that what they say is true, every cast is completely different and this show is already turning out to be something completely different than what it was the first time around which is fun for us,” Gudahl said.

Student Kara Fischer shared that they started practicing a few weeks ago and that the comedy will show April 9 and 10 at the Performing Arts Center at the high school.

“I think the cast is really fun to work with and I’m having a ball,” Fischer said.

Several other students talked about their roles in the production. Many of them play a social media platform.

In other news, Superintendent Andy Traetow provided an update on the high school’s vocational expansion project. Work on the project started in October with an anticipated June completion date.

Traetow said that crews are continuing the roof work and that the roof is nearly enclosed.

“We’re almost ready to start on the concrete work on the interior of the building and then once that’s done we’ll be able to start seeing it come to fruition,” Traetow said.

Traetow shared that as of Monday, there are no active Covid cases among students in the school district.

In other news, Traetow and business manager Chris Muhvich had reviewed the fees for activities admission, students activities and facilities fees and recommended no change. The board accepted the recommendation.

The board accepted the resignations of elementary ELL teacher, Leah Moreno; high school English teacher, Nick Johnson; special education paraprofessional, Thad Abel. The board also accepted the retirement of Cindy Opheim, teacher aide.

The board accepted the following donations:

— Canon Printer/Plotter and ink cartridges, valued at $2,000, from Kahler Electric for the high school CTE programs.

— $250 from Roberts Trucking for the school’s FFA program.

— $250 from Martin County Corn and Soybean Association for the school’s FFA program.

Starting at $2.99/week.
