BE City Council takes action on property

BLUE EARTH– A pair of abatement orders for the property located at 716 East Third Street were signed off on at the Blue Earth City Council meeting on Monday.

City Attorney David Frundt presented the council with the report from Tim Langer, Public Health Sanitarian for Faribault and Martin counties, from the inspection of the property at 716 East Third Street, as well as two orders of abatement to be served to the current residents.

“As is discussed in Mr. Langer’s report, during the inspection it was discovered that the property exhibits several nuisance conditions such as a lack of running water, numerous broken doors and windows, inadequate heating and a disconnected sewer line,” Frundt reported. “As such, it has been classified as a hazardous property and is therefore eligible for an order of abatement. I have drafted two of them; one which deals with the building as a hazardous property, and the other as a public nuisance.”

Frundt went on to explain that, as stated in the terms of the abatement orders, the owners of the property would have until June 16 to repair the property. If no objections are raised, or the deadline passes with no action taken by the property owners, the council could then take steps towards vacating and demolishing the property, as it is currently unfit for human habitation.

Hearing no further discussion on the issue, a motion was made and seconded to issue the order for abatement of hazardous conditions for the property at 716 East Third Street. The motion passed unanimously.

A second motion was then made and seconded to issue the order for abatement of public nuisance conditions for the property at 716 East Third Street. This motion also passed unanimously.

Other business discussed at the city council meeting included:

— A discussion was held regarding the listing of the three lots at the corner of Main and Seventh Street (the former location of the Three Sisters buildings) for sale, and how the council would want the space to be developed by a potential buyer. After some deliberation by the council, a motion was made and seconded to not specify any particular development requirements for the lots. The motion passed unanimously.

— Resolution 26-27 declaring 2026 Giant Days an official city event was passed unanimously.

— A temporary liquor license for the Eagles Aerie #4486 for Giant Days was unanimously approved. Mayor Rick Scholtes and council member Mike McNerney abstained from the vote.
