Man charged with assault
FAIRMONT — A Fairmont man is facing felony charges in Martin County. Michael Allen Hatfield, 47, has been charged with one count of domestic assault and one count of violation of a domestic abuse no contact order. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
According to the complaint:
On June 19, 2021, an officer with the Fairmont Police Department responded to a residence in the 900 block of Victoria Street on a report of a domestic assault. The officer arrived at the residence and made contact with a woman.
The officer observed that the woman’s arms had scratches and were bleeding. The officer was familiar with the woman and a previous incident of assault that had occurred at the residence and asked if Hatfield had assaulted her. The woman shook her head yeas and stated that Hatfield had grabbed her phone too.
The officer next spoke to Hatfield, who was at the residence. The officer informed Hatfield that he was under arrest for domestic assault and because he had an outstanding arrest warrant. Hatfield stated that he knew he had a warrant, but denied the assault.
The officer observed that Hatfield had scratches on his arm, but Hatfield said they were from a cat. Hatfield was then transported to the Martin County Jail.
Another officer spoke to the woman following Hatfield’s arrest. The woman informed the officer that an altercation between her and Hatfield happened in the kitchen area.
The woman stated that when she went to the refrigerator to get something to drink, Hatfield, who had been seated at the kitchen table, got up and started yelling at her. Hatfield then scratched her left forearm causing apparent minor injuries.
The woman stated that, during the altercation, Hatfield took her phone, which she attempted to get back because she was going to call the police. The officer confirmed with the woman that she had verbalized her intent to call the police.
A probationary Domestic Abuse No Contact Order is in effect barring Hatfield from having contact with the victim. Hatfield was convicted of fifth-degree assault and domestic assault in April 2021.
