CER’s brochures to be sent

FAIRMONT — Fairmont CER’s Spring/Summer 2021 brochure will be sent out to households later this week. A digital version of the brochure is also on the district’s website.

“All Fairmont, Ceylon, Northrop and Armstrong postal patrons should get a copy. We also have an out-of-town mailing list from past registrations,” said CER director Roni Dauer.

CER typically sends out two brochures each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Of course, last year’s brochures saw many changes and challenges.

“We sent last spring’s out as everything was closing late last March. Some things were postponed, but as the months progressed, things were canceled,” Dauer said.

A Fall/Winter 2020 brochure was not even sent out.

“In the fall, we offered virtual classes for youth and adults on a limited basis. We didn’t send it out because we didn’t have a lot on site and limited virtual class sizes,” Dauer explained.

The Spring/Summer 2021 brochure contains 48 full pages and there will be a mix of both in-person and virtual activities.

There are some new classes, as well as popular past classes including dog obedience, Lego design, gardening and cooking classes.

“There will be some new virtual cooking classes with Heather Novak this spring,” Dauer said.

Many youth sport camps also are back this season after being cancelled last year. There will be girls’ softball, T-ball, basketball camps and tennis camps.

“The triathlon and summer run we’re having this year. All that stuff got cancelled last year,” Dauer said.

Dauer explained that they also include some public information from non-profits. The brochure includes the schedule for the Fairmont Farmers Market as well as the Aquatic Park schedule. It also contains Red Rock Center activities and 4-H activities.

For activities not offered through CER, registration information is still included in the brochure.

When asked how long CER has been sending out the brochures, Dauer laughed.

Kris Seifert, CER facilities scheduler, found a binder containing past brochures and found the oldest dated back to 1986.

“We’ve changed how we’ve done it. We used to type it and shrink it on the copier and then paste it on sheets,” Seifert said.

They now do everything on a computer and send it off to be printed. While Dauer and Seifert are glad the process is simpler now, they still see the benefit of making the brochure and sending it out.

“It’s nice to have a book for reference. We do it twice a year because it’s more efficient for time and cost,” Dauer said.

Dauer said they get referrals from people and ideas from other CER organizations, but they are always looking for ideas and suggestions on new classes to offer.

Both Dauer and Seifert said they prefer people register for classes online. It can be done on the district’s website, fairmont.k12.mn.us. Select the CER tab at the top of the screen and on the left-hand side of the page there is a link for “Web Store & Activity Registration.”
