Panel gives OK to rezoning

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Planning Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved the rezoning of 924 Lake Ave. from its current heavy industrial classification to general business.

Adam Garbers, owner of Fairmont National Insurance, submitted a rezoning application for the property, intending to renovate the building from the former Midco storage site to an office space.

None of the adjacent property owners attended the public hearing or offered any negative comments about the rezoning.

The proposal now advances to the City Council for a final decision. The council will call for a public hearing, likely to be held Jan. 27, followed by a vote.

In recommending approval of the rezoning, city staff determined the proposal followed two criteria. It is consistent with city’s Comprehensive Plan, which identifies the Lake Avenue corridor as a mixed use business and industrial district. And rezoning to a general business district would not have a negative impact on the safety, property values or traffic conditions of the surrounding land or general public.
