FAIRMONT — The Bike Share program is rolling into Fairmont for its second year.
Kids Just Want To Have Fun, a subcommittee of Project 1590 that was instrumental in making it happen, is pleased to reintroduce it for the sake of health, athleticism and fun in the area.
The Bike Share program has five docked, seven-speed, durable bicycles available for free use by adults ages 18 and older. To use the Bike Share program, individuals must download the mobile app, “On Bike Share,” enter payment information (in case the bicycle is damaged or lost), and dock the bicycle once the ride has concluded.
The Bike Share program bicycle docking station is located at 1400 South Prairie Avenue in Fairmont, near the Fairmont Aquatic Park, mini golf course and dog park.
“It’s nice to see the community embrace it,” said Kids Just Want To Have Fun Board Member Meaghan Slama. “We really just want people to enjoy it. Now that it’s available again, it’s just the perfect time to get back out. Our group really enjoys doing things for the community and making fun activities, and that’s kind of our focus. And so the bike share is just a perfect fit for that because anybody can really go enjoy them.”
Citing the Fairmont Bike Share program’s remarkable success last year, with a generous number of signed-up cyclists, Kids Just Want To Have Fun anticipates many more cyclists this year. Seeing the community having fun with the program has been a very rewarding experience for the group.
“It’s just super awesome. You put a lot of effort into a project and on time. When it’s well-received and then well-used and well-liked, it’s just very, very satisfying and very encouraging that you know, all the time you put in is being really useful or it was worth it,” Slama said.
Kids Just Want To Have Fun deems the program very important for Fairmont, as it’s a great way to get exercise and explore the city with friends and family.
“Anytime you finish a bike ride, you feel just rejuvenated and kind of reinvigorated because it’s just great to be outdoors,” Slama explained.
The group’s goal for the Bike Share program this year is to watch the community make the most of the opportunity and see people, especially families, come together through bike riding.
“Each time it’s open, each season, seeing people on the bikes, enjoying the bikes, families getting out together, that would be the most rewarding. We really are thrilled when we get those reports and see that people have ridden bikes during the week and people say, oh, I took my child out and I don’t have a bike because sometimes that happens where the kids will have a bike, but the parents won’t. And so then they can go ride together if the parent checks out the bike and the kid has his own. It’s very rewarding to see that work come to fruition and to see people enjoying the bikes,” Slama said.
Regarding the possibility of expanding, adding to or changing the program, Slama shared that both Kids Just Want To Have Fun is very happy with how the program currently stands and predicts another successful year.
Now that the bicycles are available for the season, Kids Just Want To Have Fun is pedaling toward its next project, a musical playground. The project will help children develop their fine motor skills, logic, memory, literacy, focus, emotional expression, inclusivity and teamwork. The musical playground was presented to the Fairmont Park Board on Tuesday, May 21, and will touch base at the next Fairmont Park Board meeting on Tuesday, June 16.
