Optimistic about America

I'm a conservative, and I guess I should be writing a column about my great distress resulting from this election. But I'm not going to write that column, because it's not what I feel. I'm actually quite upbeat and optimistic about the country that I love. With all my genuine, and legitimate, concerns about the chaos and violence that have ravaged many of our urban areas, about the strident rhetoric dominating our media, with its grossly distorted message about what is happening in America, when it came time to vote, American democracy prevailed. Not only did Americans vote in ...

Biden message rings hollow

After four years of attacking President Donald Trump as "illegitimate," "fascist," "Nazi," "tyrant," "dictator," "racist," "anti-Semitic," "Russian stooge," "traitor," "grifter," "xenophobe," "sexist," "homophobe," "ignorant," "fat" and "lazy," Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive president-elect, now says, "Let's heal." But now, let's give each other a chance. "It's time to put away the harsh rhetoric. To ...

For sure, the foes were angry about the democratic norms the Trump camp stomped on for four long years. Its refusal to concede Biden's clear victory was only the latest. But cursing at the Trump supporters and overturning tables of Trump gear ...

Obama love affair is ongoing

Someone might survey the current media landscape and lecture us conservative media watchdogs that our game is over. Is anyone in America so remarkably naive to believe that the news media are "objective" and nonpartisan, fair and balanced? This old claim seems to have been obliterated under President Donald Trump, but it was also deeply eroded in the media's incessant and aerobic adoration of former President Barack Obama. Obviously, conservatives believe that the job of holding the news media accountable is ineluctably connected to the media's alleged watchdog role. As long as the ...
