LUVERNE — Owen Sudenga entered Thursday night’s Section 3A hockey quarterfinal with a team-high 72 points on the strength of 39 goals and 33 assists.

Add five more points to the Luverne senior forward’s totals.

Sudenga produced a game-best hat trick and two assists, while netminder Tyler Arends pitched a shutout to power Luverne to a 9-0 triumph over Fairmont Area at Blue Mound Ice Arena in Luverne.

No. 1-seeded Luverne (24-2), which extended its current winning streak to nine in a row, advances to face No. 5-seeded Marshall in a 6 p.m. sectional semifinal on Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink at the Lund Center on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter. Marshall edged No. 4-seeded Mankato West, 3-2.

No. 9-seeded Fairmont Area ended its season at 3-24 overall.

Goaltender Brandon Hector generated a game-high 42 saves for Fairmont Area as Luverne amassed a 51-15 shots-on-goal edge.

Arends tallied 15 saves to improve his seasonal mark to 19-2.

Carter Como opened the scoring with a goal before teammate Maddux Domagala delivered the first of Luverne’s two power-play goals to build a 2-0 lead after one period.

Sudenga then set up the first of Patrick Kroski’s two goals to trigger Luverne’s four-goal middle segment.

Henry Hartquist converted a neutral-ice steal into a short-handed goal before Kroski cashed in another Sudenga assist for a 5-0 margin still in the second period.

Sudenga smacked home a second power-play goal with only 53 seconds showing in the middle period to create running time heading into the third frame with a six-goal lead.

Elliot Domagala scored once in the third before Sudenga completed his hat trick with back-to-back goals, including a breakaway net-finding wrister.
