FAIRMONT — The forfeit-plagued Martin County Red Bulls could not offset 18-point early deficits to both the Class AA No. 9-ranked Marshall Tigers and the St. Peter Saints during Thursday night’s Big South Conference wrestling triangular at Cardinal Gym.
Marshall, one of the Red Bulls’ top rivals in Section 3AA, combined four falls with the three received forfeits — at 107, 114 and 127 pounds — to generate a 53-15 winning decision over Martin County in Fairmont. St. Peter then produced five pins to highlight its 51-17 dual-meet clash with the Red Bulls.
The Tigers combined five falls with a pair of forfeits received to coast to a 52-15 victory over the Saints during the triangular’s opening meet.
“We’ve got too many holes in our lineup at the moment to be able to challenge two quality teams like Marshall and St. Peter,” said Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson. “It was good to see Pierce (Rohman), Torrey (Paplow) and Bear (Berent Kosbab) each win a couple of matches tonight.”
After Marshall’s Colton Chandler and Lincoln Christenson received forfeits from Martin County at 107 and 114, the Class AA No. 9-ranked Pierce Rohman halved the Red Bulls’ deficit by needing only 40 seconds to pin Skylar Kussatz at 121 pounds.
As quickly as Rohman produced six team points, the Tigers received six more freebies when 127-pounder Landon Marthaler took a forfeit.
Paplow, who holds the No. 6 spot at 113 in the Class AA rankings, then pinned Marshall’s Dawson DeCamp in 5:03 to inch Martin County with 18-12 on the team ledger.
Class AA No. 1-ranked 133-pounder Dylan Louwagie, who just missed weight by tipping the scales at 136.3 pounds, needed just 32 seconds to earn a fall at 139 for Marshall. Tyson Louwagie followed with a 7-0 decision at 145 to extend the Tigers’ team margin to 27-12.
Kosbab then built a 6-2 first-period lead over Matt Her during 152-pound action en route to claiming an 11-5 decision for the Red Bulls.
Class AA No. 4-ranked 160-pounder Tate Condezo then triggered Marshall’s run of five consecutive wins to cap a runaway win.
Condezo posted a 19-3 technical fall before the Tigers’ Tucker Fiene outdueled the Red Bulls’ Taylor Austin in three overtimes, 4-3, at 172 pounds.
Aidan Mattison (189), No. 10-ranked 215-pounder Gavin Schaefer and heavyweight A.J. Haas then posted respective falls in 1:17, 1:58 and 39 seconds to complete a 53-15 team triumph.
Austin then joined teammates Rohman, Paplow and Kosbab in the winner’s circle during the Red Bulls’ 51-17 dual-meet loss to the Saints.
Rohman held a narrow 2-0 lead over Isaih Hesse after one completed period at 121 before combining an escape, two takedowns and a two-point near-fall to garner a 9-1 edge after two segments in the books. Rohman coasted to a 15-3 major decision over Hesse to generate Martin County’s initial points.
Paplow added one more to his individual win column by rolling by Brock Guth during 133-pound action. Paplow notched the only two takedowns of the first period en route to a 10-2 major decision.
Kosbab collected his second victory of the triangular by outlasting St. Peter’s Evan Walter, 11-8, at 152 pounds.
Walter rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to knot the score at 4s after one period before Walter and Kosbab traded escapes on each side of Kosbab’s takedown during the middle frame. Kosbab’s takedown and two-point near-fall put the match out of reach at 11-8.
Austin then needed only 1:04 to earn the referee’s slap of the mat in his 172-pound bout against Max Burger.
Addison Hanson (189), Oscar Martinez (215) and Haadi Ahmed (285) capped the Saints’ 34-point margin of victory over the Red Bulls with falls in 35 seconds, 1:52 and 2:30, respectively.
The Martin County Red Bulls compete in the Wabasso Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Marshall travels to the Hutchinson Invite on Saturday.
