FAIRMONT — Lillie Schultz, Hannah Cole and Abi Chavez made a clean sweep of the all-around competition to power the Martin County Area Magic gymnasts to a 131.875-111.05 Big South Conference dual-meet victory over the Marshall Tigers on Tuesday night.

“One hundred thirty was our goal coming into the meet,” said Magic head coach Anne Post, whose young and talent-laden lineup opened the season last week with a total of 128.775. “To surpass that number by more than one and a half points was great.

“We’ve shown good balanced scoring in our first two meets and everyone helped contribute to the team win tonight.”

Schultz, who’s just an eighth-grader, edged out Cole — a freshman — for the all-around crown, 33.825-33.55, while Chavez — the Magic’s only senior — supplied solid scoring with a third-place total of 32.525 to demonstrate the home team’s skilled depth.

Cole, Schultz and Chavez spearheaded MCA’s top-five sweep on the vault to trigger the judges’ scorecards in the purple-and-white’s direction after the opening rotation.

Cole rotated and planted a pike Tsukahara vault to net a first-place score of 9.35, while Schultz tucked a Tsuk to claim runner-up accolades at 8.95. Chavez claimed third at 8.4, Jadyn Montgomery supplied a fourth-place 8.35, while Ava Thate finished fifth off the vault table at 8.3 for the Magic.

Chavez later served as the catalyst to MCA’s top-five sweep on the final event — the floor exercise. Chavez’s turned a full to cap her second tumbling sequence before nailing a punch-front maneuver to close out her third cross-mat pass with a winning mark of 9.375.

Schultz and Cole each eclipsed the 9-point plateau on the floor with respective totals of 9.25 and 9.05, while Montgomery and Mollie Leiding earned the fourth and fifth spots with an 8.6 and an 8.5, respectively, for MCA.

Cole and Chavez delivered a 1-2 scoring punch on the uneven parallel bars for the purple-and-white. Cole turned a pair of giants on the high bar before transitioning an inward half into an inward-half dismount for a first-place score of 8.05.

Chavez claimed runner-up honors with a 7.4, Schultz followed with a fourth-place mark of 7.175, with Thate and Montgomery chipping in a 7.05 and a 6.9, respectively, on the unevens.

Schultz and Mollie Leiding paced the Magic’s 1-2 showing on the balance beam, with Chavez netting fourth. Schultz executed a back walkover and a back handspring early in her routine before transitioning from a back handspring into her dismount for a winning total of 8.45.

Leiding highlighted her second-place performance of 7.775 by planting a smooth standing back tuck before turning a back handspring.

Chavez contributed a 7.35 to MCA’s beam performances, Thate tallied a 7.3, while Cole chipped in a 7.1.

Martin County Area (2-0) travels to Worthington next Tuesday night for another conference dual meet against the Trojans.

Marshall participates in the four-team New London-Spicer Invitational at 5 p.m. Friday in New London.
