Larson passes Mavericks to 28-6 football triumph

Lucas Larson

WABASSO — Martin County West quarterback Lucas Larson utilized his accurate arm to throw for a season’s-best 255 yards and three touchdowns to stampede the Mavericks to a 28-6 prep football victory over the Wabasso Rabbits on Saturday afternoon.

Larson, who completed 14 of 22 passes on the game, fired a 71-yard scoring strike to Berent Kosbab to stake the Mavericks to a lead they would not relinquish. Talon Kettner kicked the PAT for a 7-0 edge only 3 seconds into the second quarter.

Larson and Kosbab connected again from long distance, hooking up for a 49-yard TD-producing throw with 3:46 remaining in the first half. The PAT kick failed to leave Martin County West with a 13-0 halftime lead.

Larson switched targets in the third quarter and zipped a 31-yard scoring spiral to Connor Pope before Larson hit Jacob Wilmes for the 2-point conversion pass for a 21-0 lead at the 2:38 mark.

Barret Scholl accounted for the Mavericks’ final TD of the day by scooping up a Wabasso fumble and racing 64 yards to paydirt for a score. Kettner’s kick extended MCW’s margin to 28-0 with 4:01 left in regulation.

Kosbab made five catches for 153 yards and the two TDs for the Mavericks, while Rylan Cutler snared three passes for 51 more yards. Cutler also topped the ground game with 41 yards on 12 carries, while teammate Torrey Paplow added five totes for 30 yards.

Kole Hanson, Maddex Faber and Riley Allen each produced seven tackles to top the MCW defensive effort, with Faber and Allen notching two quarterback sacks each. Kosbab contributed an interception to the Mavericks’ winning ways.
