Area roundup: Fairmont softball extends winning streak to three

WORTHINGTON – The Fairmont softball team scored a run in all but one inning during Tuesday night’s 9-2 victory over Worthington, extending the team’s winning streak to three games.

Eight different batters combined for 11 hits to fuel the offensive charge, with Bria Williamson and Brylee Miller recording three and two RBIs, respectively. The team also took advantage of walks by drawing nine. Alexis Sundeen tossed another complete game on the mound for Fairmont. She finished with one earned run and nine strikeouts.

Fairmont returns to action this Thursday with a double header at Pipestone Area starting at 4:00 p.m.

 

PREP TENNIS

ST. PETER 7, FAIRMONT 0

ST. PETER – Fairmont boys tennis fell to St. Peter on Tuesday afternoon, 7-0.

Jaxson Schaefer beat Tyler Slama 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. Brody Kennedy defeated Jonah Vetter 6-0, 6-3. Kale Schmidt topped Lilly Ortega 6-1, 6-0. Enzo Valantini bested Hudson Clayton 6-2 in both sets.

In doubles, Ashton Baker and Brayden Rothenberger defeated Zach Ashland and Audrina Suckow 6-0, 6-1. Cole Buffington and Jaego Smucler won over Leander Nelson and Parker Olsen 6-4, 6-2. Caleb Gilbertson and Elijah Cherlund-Narum beat Aiden Mutschler and Jensen Schomberg 6-2, 6-3.

The Cardinals will play Albert Lea this Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

 

PREP GOLF

KASOTA – The Fairmont girls’ golf team placed fourth in the St. Peter Girls Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Shoreland Country Club. Fairmont shot a 423, placing behind Byron, St. Peter and Blue Earth Area, respectively.

Katherine Zelaya was the lone golfer to score under 100 with a 94 on the day, earning an impressive fourth-place finish. Joslyn Meyer and Carly Gustafson cracked the top 10 with scores of 101 and 102.

The Cardinals return to the links this Thursday at New Ulm Country Club.
