Martins flatten Frogs; earn Class ‘C’ state bid
LAKEFIELD — The Fairmont Martins are returning to the Minnesota Class ‘C’ state amateur baseball tournament.
Spencer Chirpich combined shutdown pitching with run-generating offense to power No. 2-seeded Fairmont to a 10-0, eight-inning flattening of the No. 7-seeded Lakefield Horned Frogs during a Region 13 playoff series on Friday night in Lakefield.
The Martins (17-5), who posted a 10-0 seven-inning rout over the Frogs in Wednesday night’s opener of their best-of-3 series, earned one of the region’s four state bids with the Game 2 run-ruled rout.
The Martins (17-5) play host to the No. 6-seeded Jackson Bulls in Game 1 of their best-of-3 regional semifinal series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.
Jackson gained a state berth by sweeping a pair of games from the No. 3-seeded Milroy Irish.
The next two rounds will determine each Region 13 qualifier’s seeding for the state tournament. The Class ‘C’ state event begins Friday, Aug. 18, at either Delano, Dassel or Litchfield.
Chirpich pitched six shutout innings of three-hit baseball against Lakefield to earn the win for Fairmont.
The hard-throwing right-hander notched six strikeouts before turning over the final two frames to Jack Hested and Adam Schmidt. Hested worked a scoreless seventh before Schmidt struck out two in hurling a perfect eighth.
Chirpich and Jack Kosbab each produced four hits to engineer the Martins’ offensive barrage on Friday night.
Chirpich went 4-for-5 with a game-best five RBIs and scored two runs, while Kosbab went 4-for-4 with a double, a walk and one RBI.
Jon Traetow went 3-for-5 with a game-high three runs scored to go with one RBI for the Martins, while Lincoln Becker and Levi Becker each contributed two hits and two runs scored. Lincoln Becker also netted one RBI.
Fairmont erupted for four runs in the top of the first inning to set the offensive tone in Friday night’s Game 2.
Ethan Hurn delivered a leadoff single and scored on Lincoln Becker’s RBI double. Lincoln Becker then circled the bases on Traetow’s run-scoring hit.
Levi Becker followed with a single that eventually put runners at second and third before Chirpich lined a two-run single for a 4-0 Fairmont lead heading into the home half of the first.
Chirpich and Kosbab each collected RBI singles during the Martins’ fifth at-bat. Traetow and Levi Becker, who each had singled, scored for a 6-0 lead.
Chirpich singled and Kosbab walked before Nick Sandberg slugged a pinch-hit two-run double to widen the gap to 8-0 in the seventh.
Lincoln Becker and Traetow each singled and eventually scored on Chirpich’s two-run single in the eighth.
